Jones.
The foundations of a bright future in Soul music were furthered with a feature on ‘Broken Heart’ alongside friend and mentor, Booker T Jones (Grammy Lifetime Award Achiever) the song taken from the Album ‘Sound The Alarm’ which also featured the likes of Anthony Hamilton, Gary Clarke Jnr and Estelle ended up being the single and ‘Broken Heart’ went on to become Booker’s biggest UK radio hit since ‘Green Onions’ (Booker T & The MG’s) and hit the No1 spot on BBC Radio 2’s A-List and remained in the Top 20 UK Airplay charts for a twelve weeks.
Jay became wider and more commercially known following an appearance on the X Factor (Season 11). As Simon Cowell’s self confessed ‘favourite to win’ Jay went on to tour the UK & Ireland but with desires to make music and step away from the hungry lights of a short lived fame, It’s fair to say Jay would admit to feeling and always having felt more at home, creating and songwriting in late night studio sessions or ‘walking the dog’ rather than appearing and ‘walking down red carpets’ or attending celebrity parties.
Since that moment and during a long break to refocus on a music, Jay discovered a passion for broadcasting, and in reconnecting with his Military roots through Forces Radio, BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service) he did just that, once a former Royal Navy Warfare Specialist who had respectfully served 10 years, Jay now co-presents a Music Show 3 times a week to armed forces personnel, their families and forces fans to 27 Countries around the World.
From playing music out on air to regularly writing and creating, new music confirmed in 2018 alongside a UK tour as special guest to RnB Legend, Alexander O’Neal throughout April 2018.
Jay is a former Royal Navy Warfare Specialist turned Physical Trainer from Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire in South West Wales. After joining the Military from the tender age of 16, as his reports show, Jay was often described as ‘exceptional’ and from being tipped for early promotions at nearly every stage of his career, It’s also noted he was considered by many superior officer a ’Model’ Military rating and ‘Inspirational leader’ and after being nominated for an award for ‘outstanding contribution towards the Royal Navy Physical Training branch’. Jay was fore-filling every bit of his potential and personal ambition within the Forces.
During that respectful 10 years of service, Jay was involved in many campaigns, namely the Afghan conflict and National Fire strikes, served on ships HMS Nottingham, HMS Gloucester, HMS Tyne & Mersey, the Commando Helicopter Force (CHF) and many shore establishments throughout his time before becoming injured playing representative Rugby League and decided whilst on sick leave to learn a guitar purchased as a light hearted, drunken joke months previous. This was the life changing moment that a childhood dream of serving 22 years within Her Majesty’s military was to change and a completely unpredicted, unprecedented new life plan in Music was to uncover itself.
At that point, Jay became the ‘First Ever & Only’ Musician to become a ‘Royal Navy Role Model’ and be awarded a Career Sabbatical to pursue his new ambitions & promise.
Jay went on to release the ‘critically acclaimed’ debut album ‘Play It By Heart’ featuring written collaborations with John Legend , Booker T Jones, Naughty boy and super producer Malay (Frank Ocean, Zayn Malik), his debut single ‘Long may they Roll’ hit the No2 spot in the Radio 1 RnB charts.
Jay also wrote & featured on the songs “Fly” by Cinematic, released on Black Butter Records (home to Rudimental, Gorgon City and Clean Bandit) which Radio 1’s Annie Mac & Trevor Nelson described as a ‘Summer Anthem’ and on ‘Broken Heart’ by Grammy Lifetime Award Achiever Booker T Jones. The song taken from the Album ‘Sound The Alarm’ featuring the likes of Anthony Hamilton, Gary Clarke Jnr and Estelle became Booker’s biggest UK radio hit since ‘Green Onions’ which went on to hit the No1 spot on BBC Radio 2’s A-List & remained play listed in the Top 20 Radio Airplay charts for a huge six weeks.
